A Wyomissing graduate, Rich earned a full athletic scholarship to pitch at the University of Tennessee. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the sixth round of the 1986 draft. Rich's professional baseball playing career continued for 16 years, including ten years in the Major Leagues. He was also a minor league pitching coach for two years and the Northeast Area Scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers for eight years.
